Announcing a brand new program for families with young children! 1,000 Book Before Kindergarten is getting started at the Summersville Public Library in March 2016 and we are excited for you to join us.

This is an incentive program designed to help families establish good reading habits from the beginning. The 1,000 books program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children.

1,000 books sounds like a lot but it’s not so bad when you break it down.  Most of you are probably doing this already.  Books can be checked out of the library or chosen from your own home library.  There is no required participation in our events or programs but all books read aloud count towards your family’s total, and they’re fun!

Registration packets are available at the Library.  This is a self-paced program designed to blend in with your busy schedule.  Books can be tracked on a simple paper record or the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app can be downloaded from the Apple or Android app store.  Small prizes will be awarded at each 100 book milestone.  At 1,000 books a hardcover picture book will be dedicated to your family’s accomplishment and placed in the Library’s collection.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood.  Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed.  Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
